Monty’s 2025: New and Improved?
Feb 25 - Andie Valdes
Every spring The Master’s University hosts The Monty’s, an event where students dress up for a night of food, fellowship, and most importantly, performances. This year’s theme was “A Night in Paris.”
The Monty's typically takes place in March or April of every spring semester. However, this year's event was held on Saturday, Feb. 22.
But the date of the event wasn’t the only difference.
Last year, The Monty’s was held entirely inside the gym, with a catered buffet and tables to sit at during the show. This year, food trucks with beignets and crepes were stationed outside the gym in the parking lot, where students spent the first hour before the performances. There was also a charcuterie board, fun drinks from Trophy, a macaron wall, gigantic chess, and a caricature station.
Along with the many new activities, the actual production of the show also changed. Rather than the typical talent show with several different kinds of acts who had to audition, this year's event included handpicked performers, including: Brianna Harris, Benji Welch, Jared McDonald, Amy Johnson, Penelope Lorenza, Blake Spomer, Anna Parsons, and Owen Spears.
Students had many different thoughts about the new Monty’s.
Jackie Guglielmana, a junior transfer studying teacher education, was thrilled at her first attendence, “The food was great. The performances were amazing. And Amy Jo killed it.”
Alex Hilton, a senior studying biblical counseling, also enjoyed the night, “I like that it was outside and there was a lot of room to walk around. I think that’s what made it better than previous years. And Owen Spears was amazing.”
But some had mixed feelings.
Emma Alsworth, a junior studying teacher education, said “I did have a lot of fun, but there were some technical difficulties so we had to spend forty minutes waiting in line to get in. Also, there weren’t enough trash cans.”
Alsworth also missed the awards.
“Last year people were awarded for a lot of different things, but they didn’t do that this year. I feel like it was a big part of the excitement.”
Hilton also missed the awards, but appreciated the ability to enjoy the evening without the competition of voting.
Blaine Koval, a senior studying music, was “pleasantly surprised at the switch up, but had fun nonetheless.”
Despite the various changes, The Monty’s 2025 resulted in a successful night.
In the words of Alsworth, “It was different than previous years, that’s for sure. But I think it’s fun to switch things up. I can’t wait to see what they do next year.”
